విసర్గసంధి
Visarga sandhi
విసర్గసంధి అంటే పదం చివరి విసర్గ (ః) తరువాతి వర్ణాన్ని బట్టి మారడం. అకారం తరువాతి విసర్గకు మృదు హల్లు పరమైతే ఆ 'అః' 'ఓ' గా మారుతుంది: మనః + హరం = మనోహరం. ఇది సంస్కృత సంధుల్లో ఒకటి.
Visarga sandhi is the change of a word-final visarga according to the sound that follows. When a soft consonant follows a visarga that comes after a, "ah" becomes "o": manah + haram = manoharam. It is one of the Sanskrit sandhis.
నిర్వచనం Definition
Visarga sandhi is one of the Sanskrit sandhis. The visarga (a two-dot sign, h) is a sound that follows a vowel; many Sanskrit words end in it (tapah, manah, yashah and so on). Depending on the sound that follows, the visarga may stay, change or disappear. Sanskrit grammar often presents this as a third group alongside the achsandhis and halsandhis.
నియమం, ఉదాహరణలు Rule and examples
Only the rule most often seen in Telugu is given here. The rule, in textbook form: when a soft consonant (the third, fourth or fifth consonant of a class, or ya ra la va ha) follows a visarga that comes after a, that "ah" becomes "o".
Examples:
manah + haram = manoharam
tapah + vanam = tapovanam
yashah + dhanam = yashodhanam
గమనికలు Notes
Other changes apply when a hard sound (ka, pa and so on) follows the visarga, when it comes after a vowel other than a, or when a vowel follows it; those rules are not included here, and may be found in Sanskrit grammar books.
How far, and under what name, this sandhi is taught in Telugu textbooks may differ by book (subject to verification).
