Tritiya vibhakti (instrumental case)

Tritiya vibhakti (the third case, instrumental) is the form that tells with what the action was done, or with whom. Traditionally the words cheta and to are given as its endings.

Definition

Tritiya vibhakti is the form that names the means by which an action is done, or the one who accompanies it. The means is the thing with which the action is done; the companion is the person with whom it is done. In a passive construction (karmani prayogam) this case also names the doer.

Notes

This is a textbook-level account. The same "to" can mark a means (kalamto) or a companion (tallito); some books name the two senses separately. In the karaka scheme this case is usually matched with the karana (means).
