Dwipada
Dwipada is a jati metre of only two lines. Each line is said to have four ganas (subject to verification). In Telugu it has been used for long narrative poems.
Definition
A dwipada is a verse of two lines. It is one of the jati metres: defined by the number and kinds of ganas rather than by an exact sequence of syllables. Each line is said to have four ganas, usually three indra ganas and one surya gana (subject to verification). The rules for yati and prasa are given in standard prosody textbooks.
Where it is used
The dwipada is used to tell long narratives, as a chain of two-line verses. For example, the Ranganatha Ramayanam of Gona Budda Reddy and the Basavapuranam of Palkuriki Somanatha are well known to be composed in dwipada. It is also said to be close in manner to folk songs (subject to verification).
Notes
A dwipada poem has no grouping into larger stanzas: the two-line verses simply follow one another. Specific details such as the yati place and the prasa rule are not given here; see standard prosody textbooks.
