నిర్వచనం Definition
In a nan bahuvrihi the first member is a negating prefix such as a- or an-. Like any bahuvrihi, the whole word names a person or thing outside the words, but it says that this person lacks what the last member stands for. The analysing phrase ends in "... lenivadu" (one who does not have ...).
గుర్తించడం, ఉదాహరణలు Recognising it, examples
aputrudu = putrudu lenivadu, "one who has no son".
anantudu = antam lenivadu, "one who has no end".
The first part is a- in the nan tatpurusha too; the difference is in the sense. asatyam = satyam kanidi, "that which is not truth": the compound names the opposite of the last member (nan tatpurusha). aputrudu does not mean "one who is not a son" but names the person "who has no son" (nan bahuvrihi).
గమనికలు Notes
Some textbooks do not give the nan bahuvrihi separately; they include it under samanadhikarana or vyadhikarana bahuvrihi, or do not mention it (subject to verification). Whether a word is a nan tatpurusha or a nan bahuvrihi has to be decided by the sense; follow the analysing phrase given in the prescribed textbook.
