Drutaprakritika sandhi (words ending in the druta, na)
Drutaprakritika sandhi covers what happens when a drutaprakritikam, a word ending in the druta (the nasal na), is followed by a hard consonant: the hard consonant becomes a soft one, and the druta may change to a dot (bindu) or to a bare n. puchenu + kaluvalu = puchenugaluvalu.
Definition
The druta is the nasal na, the sound at the end of a word as nu or n. A word that ends in the druta is called a drutaprakritikam. Textbooks give verb forms such as puchenu, tochenu and chesenu as examples (in verse language also puchen, tochen).
Words that do not end in the druta are called kalalu. Books say that nominative forms such as vadu and ramudu belong here (subject to verification).
Drutaprakritika sandhi is what happens when a hard consonant follows such a word: the hard consonant turns soft, and the druta itself may change its form.
Rule and examples
The rule, in textbook form:
1. When ka, cha, ta, ta or pa follows a drutaprakritikam, ga, ja, da, da or ba comes in place of it. The details of this change are on the page for sarala-adesa sandhi.
2. The druta itself may then, optionally (sometimes staying, sometimes not), change into a dot (bindu) or remain as a bare n joined to the next letter (subject to verification).
3. If the first word is not a drutaprakritikam (if it is a kala), this rule does not apply. If it is a nominative form, gasadadavadesa sandhi applies instead: vadu + kotte = vadugotte.
Examples:
puchenu + kaluvalu = puchenugaluvalu (the druta stays as it is)
puchenu + kaluvalu = puchengaluvalu (the druta has become a dot)
puchenu + kaluvalu = puchen-galuvalu (the druta is left as a bare n)
Notes
A note on the name: in traditional grammars such as the Balavyakaranam, the word "drutaprakritikam" appears inside the rule for sarala-adesa; we have not confirmed that there is a separate sandhi rule under this exact name. Some school books teach this topic separately under that name (subject to verification). For that reason this page explains the term and its effects, and the page for sarala-adesa sandhi explains the change of hard consonants to soft ones.
Some books and study pages say that the druta drops when a soft or steady consonant (sarala or sthira) follows (subject to verification). Which words count as drutaprakritikalu may also differ by book.
These forms are seen mainly in verse language; in everyday Telugu today they are not usually followed.
