Sarala-adesa sandhi (hard consonants become soft ones)
Sarala-adesa sandhi is the replacement of the hard consonants ka, cha, ta, ta, pa (parushalu) by the soft consonants ga, ja, da, da, ba (saralalu) when they follow a drutaprakritika word, that is, a word ending in the nasal na: puchenu + kaluvalu = puchenugaluvalu.
Definition
Sarala-adesa sandhi is one of the Telugu sandhis. An "adesa" is a sound that comes in place of another. Here the soft consonants (saralalu) ga, ja, da, da, ba come in place of the hard consonants (parushalu) ka, cha, ta, ta, pa.
Textbooks sort the consonants into three kinds: parushalu ka, cha, ta, ta, pa (the first letter of each of the five groups); saralalu ga, ja, da, da, ba (the third letter of each group); and sthiralu, the remaining consonants.
For this sandhi the first word must be a drutaprakritikam, that is, a word that ends in the druta, the nasal na (as nu or n). When a word beginning with a hard consonant follows such a word, that consonant becomes the matching soft consonant.
Rule and examples
The rule, in textbook form: the hard consonants that follow a drutaprakritikam are replaced by the soft consonants.
The correspondence:
ka becomes ga
cha becomes ja
ta (retroflex) becomes da (retroflex)
ta (dental) becomes da (dental)
pa becomes ba
Examples:
puchenu + kaluvalu = puchenugaluvalu ("the water lilies bloomed")
tochenu + chukkalu = tochenujukkalu ("the stars appeared")
mogidenu + padmamu = mogidenubadmamu ("the lotus closed")
Do not mix up three things:
1. When the first word ends in the druta (like puchenu), the hard consonant becomes a soft one (ga, ja, da, da, ba). That is the sarala-adesa sandhi on this page.
2. When the first word is in the nominative form (like vadu or ramudu), ga, sa, da, da, va come in place of the hard consonant. That is gasadadavadesa sandhi. In both, ka becomes ga, ta becomes da and ta becomes da; the difference lies in cha (ja or sa) and pa (ba or va), and above all in which kind of word comes first.
3. What a drutaprakritikam is, and what changes can happen to the druta itself, is on the page for drutaprakritika sandhi.
Notes
These forms are seen mainly in verse language and the older style; in everyday Telugu today the rule is not usually followed. How strict the rule is may differ by book (subject to verification).
Some books write the joined form as two words (puchenu galuvalu), others as one (puchenugaluvalu); it is given here as one word.
In textbooks the name "saralalu" is used for ga, ja, da, da, ba. Some people also loosely call the ga, sa, da, da, va of gasadadavadesa sandhi "saralalu"; this use varies by book (subject to verification).
The names of the sandhis, and the way they are divided, differ somewhat by book.
