Pumpvadesa sandhi is the replacement of the final "mu" of the first word of a karmadharaya compound by "pu" or "mpu": sarasamu + mata = sarasapumata.

Definition

Pumpvadesa sandhi is one of the Telugu sandhis. An "adesa" is a sound that comes in place of another. Here "pu" or "mpu" comes in place of the final "mu" of a word. The two replacements are named together as "pumpulu" in the rule, and the name of the sandhi comes from there (subject to verification).

It is seen mainly in the karmadharaya compound, in which the first word describes the second.

Rule and examples

The rule, in textbook form: in a karmadharaya compound, "pu" or "mpu" comes in place of the final "mu" of the first word.

Examples:

sarasamu + mata = sarasapumata (or sarasampumata)

mutyamu + chippa = mutyapuchippa (or mutyampuchippa)

Notes

Which of "pu" and "mpu" occurs with which words, and whether there are conditions on the letter that begins the second word, may differ by book; only the general form is given here (subject to verification).

How forms such as "mutyapuchippa" are to be classed among the compounds may also differ by book. Textbooks usually place this sandhi under the karmadharaya compound.

The "pu" forms, as in "mutyapu chippa", sound natural in Telugu today, but the rule does not apply to every word ending in "mu".
