అజంతాలు, హలంతాలు

Ajantalu and halantalu (words ending in a vowel or a consonant)

అజంతం అంటే అచ్చుతో అంతమయ్యే పదం; హలంతం అంటే హల్లుతో అంతమయ్యే పదం. తెలుగు పదాలు సాధారణంగా అచ్చుతో ముగుస్తాయి (రాముడు, నది, ఇల్లు), అందుకే తెలుగును అజంత భాష అంటారు.

An ajantam is a word ending in a vowel; a halantam is a word ending in a consonant. Telugu words usually end in a vowel (ramudu, nadi, illu), which is why Telugu is called an ajanta bhasha.

నిర్వచనం Definition

అచ్ అంటే అచ్చు, హల్ అంటే హల్లు; అంతం అంటే చివర. అజంతం అంటే అచ్చు చివర ఉన్న పదం; హలంతం అంటే హల్లు చివర ఉన్న పదం. పదం చివర ఉన్న ధ్వనిని బట్టి చేసే ఈ విభజనను వ్యాకరణ గ్రంథాలు పదాలను, ప్రాతిపదికలను వర్గీకరించడానికి వాడతాయి.

Ach means vowel, hal means consonant, and antam means end. An ajantam is a word with a vowel at the end; a halantam is a word with a consonant at the end. Grammar books use this division by the final sound to classify words and noun stems.

గుర్తించడం, ఉదాహరణలు Recognising it, examples

Telugu ajantalu: ramudu (u), nadi (i), illu (u), kaki (i), uru (u).

Some words of Sanskrit origin end in a consonant in the source language; Telugu adds a vowel to them: tapas becomes tapassu, yashas becomes yashassu.

This is why Telugu is called an ajanta bhasha. Because words end in vowels, the rules of sandhi depend on the final vowel of the word (utva, itva and atva sandhi, for example).

గమనికలు Notes

Some words that came from languages such as English or Urdu may end in a consonant in speech, and sometimes in writing; how common this is varies with use (subject to verification). The description "ajanta bhasha" mainly states a feature of Telugu's own words. Books may treat words ending in the anuswara (pustakam) in different ways (subject to verification).
