Navarasa (the nine rasas)

The navarasa are the nine rasas of the traditional scheme: shringara, hasya, karuna, raudra, veera, bhayanaka, bibhatsa, adbhuta and shanta. Each rasa has an associated sthayibhava, a permanent emotion.

Where it is used

The navarasa are used as a standard frame when analysing Telugu poems, plays, dance and art. Several rasas can appear together in one work; in criticism the principal one is usually identified.

Notes

It is commonly said that the Natyashastra in its well-known form lists eight rasas, and that later works added shanta as the ninth (subject to verification). The sthayibhava of shanta appears as shama in some works and as nirveda in others. Some traditions also speak of further rasas such as vatsalya (parental affection) and bhakti (devotion) (subject to verification); they are not explained separately here. No lines from works are quoted as examples.
