రసం
Rasa (aesthetic sentiment)
Rasa is the aesthetic relish or emotional experience that a sensitive reader or spectator has on reading a poem or watching a play. In rasa theory it is said to arise from a sthayibhava, a permanent underlying human emotion.
Definition
The everyday meaning of rasa is 'taste' or 'essence'. In poetics it denotes the emotional experience that a work creates. According to the formula traditionally attributed to Bharata's Natyashastra, rasa is realised through the combination of vibhava, anubhava and sancharibhava. Vibhavas are the characters and situations that cause an emotion; anubhavas are the gestures, expressions and words that show it outwardly; sancharibhavas (also called vyabhicharibhavas) are the passing, transitory feelings that come and go alongside it. The permanent emotion underlying all these is the sthayibhava.
Where it is used
The idea of rasa is used to understand poems, plays, dance and music. A work is usually said to have one principal rasa, with others playing a supporting part. In Telugu the phrase navarasalu is also used in everyday speech for the range of human moods, apart from its use in literature and dance.
Notes
Traditions give different explanations of how rasa comes about and in whom it is experienced; these are not taken up here. The sancharibhavas are commonly counted as thirty-three (subject to verification). The number of rasas is given differently in different traditions; the standard list is on the page on the nine rasas. No lines from works are quoted as examples.
