Tugagama sandhi (insertion of ta between u and a vowel)
Tugagama sandhi is the insertion of "ta" in a karmadharaya compound when a vowel follows a word that ends in the vowel u: pandu + aku = pandutaku.
Definition
Tugagama sandhi is one of the Telugu sandhis. An "agama" is a sound that is newly added. Here the added sound is "ta". When the first word ends in the vowel u and the second begins with a vowel, a "ta" comes in between them, and the initial vowel of the second word joins that "ta".
Rule and examples
The rule, in textbook form: in a karmadharaya compound, when a vowel follows a word ending in u, a "ta" is added.
Examples:
pandu + aku = pandutaku (a ripe or yellowed leaf)
niggu + addamu = niggutaddamu (a shining mirror)
chekku + addamu = chekkutaddamu
Notes
When a vowel follows u, utva sandhi usually takes place, that is, the u drops. In these compounds a "ta" comes instead, or optionally alongside it. Books say that some words (such as peru and chiguru) have both forms: chiguru + aku = chigurutaku or chiguraku (subject to verification).
Which words take it obligatorily and which optionally may differ by book; only the general form is given here.
These forms are seen mainly in verse language; some, such as "pandutaku", are also heard in Telugu today.
